LAURAN HIBBERD
STYLE.
I have been proudly named a slacker pop artist!! After constantly debating my genre for over 4 years I’m happy to finally be happy with where I’m at stylistically (writing lazy hits).
My music is perfect for anyone who is ‘too cool’ to admit that they love pop music!! It’s scratches that itch, but is cleverly disguised around heavy guitars and a lot of nods to 90’s rock. A lot of old men seem to like it…
BIO.
Originally, I started out as a folk artist but soon got handed a Weezer album and watched my life flash before my eyes. I started combining my love for lyrics with trashy guitars and garage rock and stumbled across a new favourite genre. ME ME ME ME!! My live band is Jake Richardson on guitar, Ellis Durand on bass and Max Perry on drums.
The band started on the Isle of Wight (I know right). I have spent a truck load of time on that ferry. I like to think I keep it in business! I started playing my first gigs at 16 years old, with bands from music college. I was the only one who hadn’t gigged before in my class and I basically just puked at the thought of it. I still get super nervous before gigging, but I am lot better at managing it now – and I know what to expect. Touring got me in a good routine.
I have since then released a bunch of singles, a debut EP, and am about to release a second EP (recorded with LA producer ‘Suzy Shinn’) whilst recording my debut album. I’ve been lucky enough to tour with Hippo Campus and The Regrettes around the UK and Europe, play some bucketlist festivals (GLASTONBURY) and sell out my own headline tours.
Lockdown has stopped everything ‘live’ in it’s tracks so having the time to write songs 24/7 has definitely become my only love right now. I wrote a song a day for 6 weeks straight last year as some whacky experiment and I’m pretty sure I got the bulk of my album from being in that headspace. Basically, I am on a mission to get Rivers Cuomo to fall in love with me.
Q & A.
FOR THOSE THAT HAVEN’T HEARD OF YOU BEFORE, DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND IN ONE SENTENCE:
Quick witted wannabe rock for teenage girls and older men.
INFLUENCES?
My musical style has been heavily influenced by bands like Weezer and Pixies. The main thing I take from these bands is that you can write a song about anything. I’ve gone as far to write songs about my answer to making money could be getting a sugar daddy.
YOUR FAVOURITE MUSIC VENUE IN THE UK:
My favourite venue I have ever played in the UK has to be Shepherds Bush Empire in London, it was unreal. The venue closest to my heart and the best local has to be Joiners in Southampton though.
YOU ARE SENT TO MARS, NO CHECK-IN BAGGAGE AND YOU CAN TAKE ONE RECORD. WHICH ONE?
It HAS to be Weezer’s blue album, I got it stuck in my car’s CD player for over a year so am familiar with having only that to listen to – plus it’s genius.
WE ARE PROUDLY SUBCULTURE INSPIRED. HOW ABOUT YOU?
100%! I think it shapes who we are, I remember being super influenced by the hipster culture a few years back and wrote tonnes of songs about it. Working on making Slacker Pop a subculture now!
