PERFECT FOR: Long, dark walks on winter nights… the soundtrack to your 80s, B-Movie horror inspired fantasies.
WHERE FROM: Newport, South Wales.
STARTED PERFORMING: Early 2019
STORY: The Nightmares is Adam Parslow (Vocals & Guitar), Eleanor Coburn (Keys & Vocals), Benjamin T. Mainwaring (Bass) and James Mattock (Drums & Vocals) and we formed in late 2018, having met through previous projects and shared musical influences (The Cure, Alkaline Trio, Placebo, Bright Eyes, Interpol, etc.).
We immediately started writing songs together before self-releasing our self-titled debut EP on April 12th, 2019.
Following the release, we spent the rest of 2019 touring our native UK with artists such as Tiger Army, Grave Pleasures & Holding Absence and looked forward to more extensive touring in 2020.
Any touring plans were quickly shelved though, as the world was forced into lockdown following the outbreak of coronavirus. So, we spent this period pouring our collective hearts into the writing of our debut record.
In April of 2021, we signed to Venn Records in the UK/Europe and Equal Vision Records in the US/ROW and started to put plans into place for the release of our first full length album.
On April 7th, 2023, we released our debut LP, “Séance”, into the world.
Q & A.
What influences your musical style?
The dark side of the human psyche and all things macabre in this world.
Which bands and artists have inspired you?
Alkaline Trio / The Cure / Placebo / Interpol /AFI
Notable more recent influences are?
We’re constantly influenced by the artists around us… some that stand out for me would be: Twilight Sad / Dear Boy / Choir Boy / Soft Kill / House of Harm… to name but a handful!
Share with us an interesting anecdote behind any of your songs
It’s not a song in particular, but the entire writing of our debut album, “Séance”, was inspired, in part, by Adam & Ellie’s real experiences with the dark art of the séance.
We are anti bullying – What’s your advice for victims of bullying ?
What’s your advice for victims of bullying? Always remember it is not your fault and it is more of a reflection of the person(s) that is behaving this way. Talk to someone you trust. Confide in those close to you. Try to find your tribe… people that lift you up and make you feel like you can truly be you. And remember that whatever the situation is… it WILL get better.
You are important. You are enough. Always be your true self and NEVER change for anybody!
If you are to be described as an animal, what would it be?
A Bat, obviously.
Your favourite music venue in the UK:
Le Pub, Newport. 100%.
We are proudly Subculture inspired. How about you?
How about you? Absolutely. I am personally a member of ‘The Satanic Temple’ and I also grew up deeply immersed in the punk / goth / emo / hardcore communities. These communities mean the world to me to this day.
You are sent to Mars, no check in baggage and you can take one record- which one?
‘Floodland’ by Sisters of Mercy.
A guilty pleasure number?
I’m not sure it’s a particularly guilty pleasure as I’ll listen to most genres but I absolutely love ‘Super Bass’ by Nicki Minaj. I can rap both verses off the top of my head.
The first music your bought
Enema of the State’ by blink-182.
The first live gig you attended.
Tina Turner with my parents.
Is there a song you wish you had written?
Tough one… but I’ll go ‘Don’t You (Forget About Me)’ by Simple Minds.
