Valeras

STYLE.

High energy indie-rock with heavy guitars and 80s influences perfect for anybody that’s ever felt like they didn’t fit in.

Rose: I have felt like an alien in so many scenarios in my life and I always appreciated finding a thing where I felt at home. Hopefully we can be that thing for somebody.

BIO.

A string of early singles has already seen Valeras earning plaudits across a vast array of publications and early radio support from the likes of Radio 1, BBC6, & Radio X. The Reading based indie-rock duo are now gearing up to release new music.

Cementing their sound whilst out on the road with the likes of Yonaka, Drenge, King Nun and The Wombats, and playing festivals across the world including Sziget (Hungary) and Mad Cool (Madrid), has led VALERAS to writing their most ambitious and personal work to date.

Vocalist and co-songwriter Rose knows very well the anxiety and pressure on her audience to fit the norm as a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community. Her lyrics reflect her feelings of loneliness and her desire to empower the downtrodden. These are drawn from her personal experiences to become accepted in a new country, after fleeing her home in Venezuela to settle in the UK when she was aged 10 years old.

The band have been gearing up to release the work they have working on alongside producer & songwriter Tarek Musa (Dead Nature & Spring King). With this candid new direction comes an expansion of the duo’s dynamics, which represents another musical leap forward for the band.

Q & A.

FOR THOSE THAT HAVEN’T HEARD OF YOU BEFORE, DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND IN ONE SENTENCE.

Rose: Heartbreak lyrics but make it danceable.

Max: Loud, energetic and a lot of thought & inspiration behind it all.

INFLUENCES?

We both love bands like The Strokes, QOTSA (Queens of The Stone Age) and Wolf Alice. However, Rose’s favourites are Gorillaz, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and The Black Keys & Max is more inspired by bands like LCD Soundsystem, Talking Heads & David Bowie. All these artists have influenced us massively.

SHARE WITH US AN INTERESTING ANECDOTE ABOUT ONE OF YOUR SONGS.

Rose: I wrote a song about my now ex-girlfriend before we started dating at the time. It was a bitter song cos I thought she didn’t like me back, but we started dating and it turned out to be her favourite song of ours and she never knew what it was about. She asked me a few times and I had to lie and say it was about somebody else.

YOU ARE SENT TO MARS, NO CHECK-IN BAGGAGE, AND YOU CAN TAKE ONE RECORD – WHICH ONE?

David Bowie – The Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders from Mars. If there’s life on Mars, I’m sure they’d dig this record.

YOUR FAVOURITE MUSIC VENUE IN THE U.K.?

Gotta be the Roundhouse in Camden. We supported the Goo Goo Dolls there and it was incredible!

WE ARE PROUDLY SUBCULTURE-INSPIRED. HOW ABOUT YOU?

Heck yeah. Freedom of expression is so important to us as individuals and as a band, and we are inspired by those who create their own space to be themselves and create their own rules.
