‘Creation Stories / Riots, Raves and Running a Label’ by Alan McGee

‘I’d taken a lot of pills already that night, but then I made the mistake of asking Shaun Ryder for another one. He only gave me half, but it was the strongest pill I ever took. That’s when Debbie’s face became a giant green diamond and I had to wander off.  Tony Wilson was there, in a shining white suite, like God, or a king. I found Debbie dancing and suddenly I started dancing too and I understood what the music was about. It was something new, something incredible. It felt like it was going to change everything.’ – Alan McGee

Instinctual icon Alan McGee appeared to have a knack as a tastemaker. Having managed the Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Oasis, and Primal Scream, and the Libertines his talent-spotting skills were second to none. Having been there through the height of rave culture and Brit Pop, the musical maverick undoubtedly has many stories to share.

His autobiography Creation Stories : Riots, Raves and Running a Label charts the shenanigans of the 1990s answer to Malcolm McLaren and Tony Wilson. Covered in colloquialisms and albeit straightforward language, the book has a personal tone to it: you almost feel like you’re in Wendy’s burger bar with him as William Reid of The Jesus and Mary Chain fires him as their manager.

Amusing anecdotes are in abundance: from hanging out with Tony Blair in Downing Street to the creation of Creation; from his heady Hacienda experiences to the dysfunctional relationship between the notorious Carl Barat and Pete Doherty. Whilst there’s debauchery and fun by the boat load, the book is not without its troubling tales: Alan explores his childhood with an abusive father as well as his drug-induced breakdown during the ‘90s. The dark side is candidly conveyed, and makes for a gripping musical memoir.
