MADE IN THE UK / THE MUSIC OF ATTITUDE 1977-1983 BY JANETTE BECKMANSKU: AC-BK009
Go ahead, judge a book by its cover. Made in the UK: The Music Attitude 1977-1983 does exactly what it says: in one-hundred and thirty-two pages of photographic perfection, it chronicles the ‘look’, the sights, the feel and the energy of a time in music where subculture reigned supreme.
Janette Beckman, born in London, first began photography when she snapped punk-rock pariahs Siouxsie and the Banshees. With her career flourishing as she worked for music magazines Melody Maker and the Face during the late seventies, Janette had unique access to an above ground underworld; a place in which subversive and rebellious energies began to emerge. She began to build an intimate rapport with her subculture subjects, which allowed her to endlessly add to her awesome photographic anthology.
What was so magical about her photography in particular, was that the thin wall between audience, fans, and the bands was demolished. In a current world where security is rife, where endless emails are exchanged before even the slightest chance of meeting a band, Janette’s maverick photography and legendary portraits are something of a dream. From the snarling sneers of the seditious street punks, to the infectious energies of the smiling Ska Girls, Janette really did capture it all.
